As a Clinical Psychologist in the Adult Learning Disability Team, you will provide specialist psychological assessments and therapeutic interventions for adults with learning disabilities and associated mental health difficulties. You will work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team to enhance service users’ quality of life and promote independence. This role also includes providing consultation, training, and supervision to support the wider team and service development initiatives.

Key Responsibilities for the Clinical Psychologist Job in Aberdeen

  • Conduct specialist psychological assessments, formulations, and interventions for adults with learning disabilities and additional mental health or behavioral challenges.
  • Provide individual and group therapy using evidence-based approaches such as CBT, PBS (Positive Behaviour Support), ACT, and systemic therapy.
  • Work as part of a multidisciplinary team, collaborating with psychiatrists, nurses, occupational therapists, and social workers.
  • Offer consultation, training, and supervision to other healthcare professionals, carers, and families.
  • Contribute to service development by participating in audits, research, and quality improvement projects.
  • Support in capacity assessments and best-interest decision-making in accordance with relevant legal frameworks.
  • Ensure compliance with ethical, professional, and legal standards in psychological practice.

Requirements for the Clinical Psychologist (Adult Learning Disability Team)

  • Doctorate in Clinical Psychology (DClinPsy or equivalent) accredited by the HCPC.
  • HCPC registration as a Clinical Psychologist.
  • Experience working with adults with learning disabilities and associated mental health conditions or challenging behavior.
  • Proficiency in conducting psychological assessments, risk evaluations, and therapeutic interventions.
  • Knowledge of PBS, neuropsychological approaches, and trauma-informed care.
  • Ability to work independently while also contributing to a multidisciplinary team.
  • Strong understanding of Mental Capacity Act, safeguarding policies, and NICE guidelines.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Additional training in neurodevelopmental assessments, trauma-informed therapy, or systemic approaches.
  • Experience in forensic settings, autism services, or complex care pathways.
  • Research experience with contributions to service evaluations or published clinical studies.
  • Previous experience working in NHS, private healthcare, or community mental health services.
